Editorial, Style, and Gen AI Guidelines

Table of Contents

Style Guide

CIS generally follows AP Style, with a few MIT- and CIS-specific exceptions outlined in our internal style guide.

For citations, we use The Chicago Manual of Style. Reference the citation guide here.

Generative AI Guidelines

CIS follows MIT’s principles for using generative AI in content creation:

  • Human authorship: All articles, newsletters, and video scripts are written by humans to ensure accuracy and avoid bias.
  • Limited AI assistance: Generative AI may be used in early-stage support—such as brainstorming, background research, outlining, data analysis, and light editing (e.g., cutting text, drafting headlines, alt-text, and social media posts).
  • No AI-generated images are permitted.

Articles for MIT News

MIT News has specific editorial standards and submission protocols. If you’re planning to submit content:

  • Meet with Amanda Soh or Michelle English to ensure alignment with MIT News requirements.
  • Plan ahead: Publication by the Institute’s news team may take several weeks after submission.
  • Submitters: For CIS content, contact Michelle; for MISTI content, contact Amanda. Only designated communications staff may submit via the MIT News portal.
