Funded Internship Process for Graduate students:

  • MEng (MIT students who attend one additional Master’s year on top of their MIT undergraduate experience) – These students are considered undergraduates by MISTI and no requests are needed.
  • Master’s – MISTI central will rarely provide funding. Must submit request.
  • PhD’s –
    • If the student is interested in doing research in international relations, direct them to complete the CIS Summer Research Grant application. Due in March.  Tell April you submitted an application.
    • If the student is interested in doing research in a different discipline and you’re willing to pay for their placement, email April with your request.
    • If the student is interested in doing a traditional internship (not PhD research), funding will need to be provided through your country program funds. Email April to notify her that you will be using funds for a PhD student (you do not need to request to pay them, but April would like to be notified).

Funded Internship Process for Fall Interns:

If you want to use funding for the Fall, you must submit a request. This funding will be taken out of your funding for the following fiscal year.

Airtable Process for Funded Internships

In your Airtable Interface, here are the relevant columns for Funded Internships:

  • You can find the Cost Object number in the column next to the Funded Internship Allocations column in Airtable.
    • It is very important that you include the proper naming convention when you pay a student. If the name does not fit the convention, please shorten it until it does.  The naming convention is: MIT-Country, Student Name, Stipend Name
      • Here is an example: Spain, Bitman, Sun
  • Amount Allocated (from MISTI) – The amount allocated for everyone is currently $6000. As soon as you know your student is NOT going to be paid $6000 from MISTI funds (maybe a host is paying some percentage or the student does not need that much money), let Isabelle know, so she can update the amount allocated.
  • MISTI Payment Complete – When you check this box, it means the student has been paid the Amount allocated (from MISTI) in full. Please check this box as soon as you have completely finished paying a student using the MISTI funds. We expect this box to be checked off by September 30th or earlier. If you need more time to pay your students, let us know.
  • Total Payments from Funded Internship (from Student Payments) –Robert will record the amount that has been paid to the student here. It should match the “Amount Allocated (from MISTI)” by the end of the summer.

Contact Isabelle if you:

  • Want to split an allocation between two or more students.
  • Want to pay your student less than $6000.
  • Want to use funds for a placement in the Fall or later.
  • Want to use funds for a grad student.
  • Do not want/need these funds anymore.
  • Delete an allocation or make an error when paying a student.
  • Want to use funds for Fitzgerald and Palitz (description in “MISTI Funds and their Requirements” above).
